pilatesWhat is Pilates?

Modified Pilates is a form of movement retraining that reconditions the body from the central core to prevent and treat lower back pain, sports injuries, poor posture and poor flexibility.  It is a low impact from of muscle strengthening which focuses on controlling the core while performing sequenced movements of the trunk and limbs. The complexity of each movement is increased as you improve control over the key postural muscles.

Spinal stability research has shown that specific retraining of the Multifidus and Transversus Abdominis, deep postural muscles of the spine and abdomen, reduces the recurrence rate of lower back pain. Studies demonstrate that Multifidus muscle wasting and poor activation of the abdominals occurs in patients with acute, first episode low back pain and this muscle recovery is not automatic after the resolution of pain and stiffness. This deficit can be reversed with specific activation exercises while two to three year follow up studies have shown that the recurrence rate of low back pain was reduced by 50% in patients who performed these exercises. An integral part of the Pilates method is retraining correct activation and motor control of these muscles.

pilates2At Gorey Pilates Studio we offer a 60 minute class, with both morning and evening times, run by a qualified APPI Matwork Chartered Physiotherapist. Our small class size, with a maximum of 8 participants, allows your Physiotherapist to ensure everyone in the class is carrying out the exercise correctly to get the best results. Pilates is appropriate for all ages and levels of fitness. It is equally suited to both men and women. Many of the top sporting teams use pilates exercises as part of their regular training programs.
